Jarlyn leaves home early today to go to work. she goes downstairs in her flip-flops, carrying her beautiful stilettos in her hand to put them on once she sits in the car. she hopes to warm it up well and drive to work. she starts pumping and trying to start it several times, but realizes that it is not responding. she doesn't want to start, so she gets out and checks the engine to see if there is anything loose that she can adjust. she tries again, but it's still impossible. she gives it hard, long starts along with pumping the pedal, but her efforts are useless. she is tired and frustrated and wants to check the engine again, as if hoping that something will fix it so she can start it. she begs it to start for her, and finally it shows signs of starting, but it is very, very weak and cannot stay on. she takes off her right shoe and tries to pump the clutch, but she resigns herself to the fact that nothing she does will make this old, weak car start for her.
